Extra semicolons, free to a good home

Sep 05, 2011 12:00

I noticed that my last several posts have been dreary unhappy crap, so it's obviously time I posted about something else.

I finished reposting Reverb to AO3, and I'm now starting on the review of Phoenix Rising.  This means going back to a much earlier point in my development as a writer -- Phoenix Rising was my second MacGyver piece, the first one ( Read more... )

Heh, we should start a semicolon shelter! ;D

(Not that I'm going to be re-tweaking any of my old stories anytime soon, but I tend to develop a large pile of rejected semicolons, em-dashes, commas, ellipses, and other pause-indicating devices by the side of my laptop every time I try to write dialogue. Or meta. *g* Or anything else that requires more editing than the standard LJ comment, really... ;D)

I used to be able to maintain a level of cosmic balance: Lothi used too many hyphens, and my former boss didn't use enough.

My Code Rage persists EVERY TIME I try to edit an auto-Tweet log. Centered lists. Images placed at the top of the post. Deleted content behind an LJ-Cut. A carriage return crashing my browser. I know XHTML & CSS, but editing unordered lists requires the Rich Text Editor because of the user-unfriendliness of the markup.

Even tried the Dreamwidth-crosspost-editing workaround, NO JOY.

But YAY to your AO3 & story revision progress! :)

Fig recommended a magical little toy to me called Semagic -- have you ever tried that one?

I haven't; I'm afraid I'd be disappointed because I doubt Semagic can overcome the LJ bugs when editing a post if the auto-cross-edit-post via DW gets fux0red, which isn't browser or OS-related.

Isn't it sad to have the critters piling up unused, unseen, and no doubt feeling unloved? I've been scrubbing them from my own prose in order to make the stuff more legible as well as sparing the reader multiple eye-stumbles in any given paragraph. It's an interesting discipline to impose on one's writing, and I think the results are improved thereby. (Or would LIKE to think so.)

Oh, I still keep a reasonable number around -- enough so that the breeding stock has a viable gene pool. Semicolons do have their uses; it's best to keep that in mind.

And welcome to LJ! BTW, if when the next hurricane hits south Florida, this journal will be the first location for status updates for me. I've arranged for it to be covered even in the event that I lose power and internet access.
