Is there a meaning to everything, or are we just here by coincidence? Although this study only begins to scratch the surface, everything MUST have meaning, right? But not every meaning as as readalbe, is it? Sometimes, we are going to have to break away the shell in order to read between the lines.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what you mean. I do know that Philip Pullman is an atheist, so what he considers meaning may be different than what I consider meaning.
I do think that people who don't believe in a god are more likely to idolize other things, though. In his case that may be literature. That's how I took this quote, at least.
