[locked to Nate]

[Sirius does not sound happy at all] ...You want to explain to me exactly what you've been doing lately? Or rather, what LaRue's been doing? And why?

[locked to Lance and Slate]

I think we've got a problem.

[he sounds panicked] They don't trust me, and they want me to reveal myself. I tried the whole "the Magistrate put me here as his assistant" angle and everything, but they didn't care, because they never received any orders about it. What do I do, Lance?

They said they haven't accused me of anything and they would offer protection if I told them everything but...what if they lock me up? I can't go through that again.

[ The response is delayed, but not overly-so. Sefton has no idea what's going on, but judging from Sirius' tone, he'll just have to be Lance's mouthpiece until there's more time to explain.

If he sounds concerned, it's because he is, for Sirius and for whatever situation he's just been dumped into. The confusion is set aside for now. ]

... They won't lock you up; I'll put you in my safehouse before it comes to that. Tell them, Sirius. Let me in on the lock and I'll back you up, but tell them-who you are, why you're doing what you're doing... tell them about the secret police.

[there's a long pause] You know Slate won't be happy about this. But I think it's the only way they're going to work with us...

[ There's a pause on his end, too, as he listens to Lance before he repeats what's said. ]

I don't care what Slate thinks. The secret police were useful to get into the cracks the police couldn't, but they aren't and should never have been the ultimate law in the city.

[he sighs, and it's a bit relieved] As long as you'll back me up on this, I agree with you. We ought to alert the rest of the secret police as to what's going on, too.

Yes. If we're lucky we might be able to convince Jim and Givens to keep this to themselves to keep as much of our secrecy as possible, but the others ought to know things have changed.

[ Beat. ]

Except Nate. As far as I'm concerned, he lost the right to be part of this the instant he started taking his own measures.

I don't think Jim is going to take part in anything remotely involving secrecy, but maybe if he could be convinced it was for our own protection...

I did give them a pretty big hint about his identity, so I'm sure they'll figure it out quickly enough.

We do have ins that the normal police don't. Look, he's an admiral, right? Tell him to think of it as only giving out information regarding orders to those who need it. Not everyone needs to know about us, and the more who don't, the more places we can get into to get information to give them.

That helps, but it's not enough if they still don't trust us.

I'll just let you in on the conversation, alright? You can help me convince him.

I have it. We'll get through this, Sirius.
