Afternoon and evening of the 23rd. polarisation January 24 2011, 01:38:04 UTC
Sefton had little to do. After making all of the arrangements for any of the residents who wanted to move to the Victoria before the snow had set in, making sure the doctors had gotten as much as they needed and generally finishing all the rest of his work, he... really didn't have much to do.

People weren't his forte. Sick people were definitely not his forte. Being stuck here with everyone else, nowhere to run, simply waiting for something to happen was not how he envisioned things would go when he gave the okay for the hostel to house the sick.

All he had left to do was to curl up in one of the more comfortable chairs in the parlor (closer to the corner of the room, not in the open) and read a book. The owner of the hostel had exactly two things to be thankful for amidst all this mess: that the full moon had already risen four days ago, and that his wings were once again hidden with the magic in his bracelet.

If anyone needed him for whatever reason, he wouldn't be hard to find. He made sure of that, at least.

To most people, the guy sitting over in that chair might look like he didn't particularly want to be bothered. But did Sinclair care? Not really. He'd been going a bit stir-crazy lately, keeping himself cooped up in the hostel--since he wanted to keep away from this...plague as much as he could (though with all the sick people being brought here now, he wondered if he might as well just go jump into a sewer?). But with all the snow suddenly, going anywhere seemed a little out of the question anyway, unless it was just into the courtyard to instigate a massive snowball fight. Maybe later.

Right then, as Sin walked into the parlor and spotted the guy with the book, nothing seemed more appealing than going over and bothering him striking up a friendly conversation. After all, no matter how reluctant they were at first, most people came to enjoy his company!

So he sidled up beside the chair, propping his elbow on the back as he peered over Sefton's shoulder, trying to get a peak at his book. "Whatcha reee~eadin'?"

Sefton, as drawn into the book as he was, certainly didn't notice (or expect) anyone drawing in so close. When the man spoke up, he jumped, nearly vaulting out of his chair - it was only a lot of practice on ignoring the instinct that kept him from actually doing it. Instead, he shrunk away into the opposite corner of the chair and gave Sin an odd look.

"'Scuse me?" he asked. Amidst the sudden scare of person right next to him holy crap, he had missed the question entirely.

Sin just laughed at that reaction (though not unkindly), and shifted to perch on the arm of the chair that Sefton had scooted away from. He seemed completely unaffected by that look, probably because he was used to receiving them from people. Odd looks, scolding looks, dirty looks--he'd become practically impervious.

"What're you reading?"

When Sin sat even closer, Sefton's expression shifted to uncomfortable and he stood, placing a few steps of distance between them, and held the book against his chest as if it were some sort of barrier. It wasn't even close to the smooth maneuver he wanted, but it was too late to take back now. He licked his lips before answering, "Just a book."

"Oh, you didn't have to get up," Sin said, as if completely oblivious to the source of Sefton's discomfort. Which he, in all likelihood, was not. Even so, he slid right into the vacated seat, sitting with casual, sloppy posture, his cheek propped on his fist and one leg dangling over the side.

"'Just a book'?" Sin quirked an eyebrow. "There's nothing at all outstanding or interesting about it? I find that hard to believe, you look like an intelligent, interesting young man who wouldn't be wasting his time anywhere."

Was he teasing? His tone and his smile seemed to imply as much.

Sefton rolled his eyes to himself. It didn't look like this guy actually wanted anything, so Sefton didn't have to act as manager, right? Right. No, he could act like himself, the awkward teenager whose unusually large personal space bubble had just been so rudely popped.

"Not a whole lot else t' do right now, if y'didn't notice," he answered. "Kinda stuck here 'n all."

Sin tipped his head back and sighed. The parlor light glinted off his lip ring, which jutted a little as he pursed his lips. "Yeah, I noticed." That was how he found himself down here talking to this guy, after all. Sefton's remark seemed to have dulled his amusement, reminding him too acutely of his own sorry predicament.

Glancing at Sefton, Sin asked, "Does this happen often in this place? You know," he made a gesture, "plagues, quarantines, snowstorms."

"Sorta," Sefton said after taking a moment to think about it. The guy was obviously new around here, with a question like that. Not to mention the unfamiliar face. "Try zombies, earthquakes and death breaking."

Sin was very new. It had been exactly one week since he'd arrived, and everyday it was seeming less and less likely that he'd find his way home anytime soon. So, in the meantime, he was trying to make himself comfortable, and-wait, what--

"Death breaking?" He sat up a little straighter and gave Sefton a look.

Sefton nodded, shifting so that he could mark the page in his book and close it. "S' fixed now," he said. His tone wasn't flippant, but it did carry hints of resignation.

For that answer, Sefton was just rewarded with more looking. This time with a hint of confusion indicated by the knitting of his eyebrows. "What does that even mean?"

Whatever it was, it didn't sound very good.

Sefton huffed, moving to curl up in some other chair nearby. "This place's crazy s' what it means."

"Yeah, I've already come to that conclusion." Sin shrugged, and seemed to let his concern over those ominous words slip away for now. He shifted so he could look at Sefton more easily, now that it didn't seem like the guy was going to walk away from him.

"So how long have you been here?"

How long had he been here? Too long. Much too long. Sefton frowned at the question, discarding his initial answer to it in favor of actually thinking it over. He had gotten here at the end of April, and it was January now, so...

The realization provoked a grimace from the blue-haired teenager. "Nine months."

Sin's eyes widened, and he whistled his amazement. "Man, that really blows." Then, he frowned, glancing off to the side--he'd only been here a week, he couldn't imagine being here nine months. He'd go crazy! He couldn't be away from home from that long, he had things to do, a job to do. A partner to support. What was Mikkel going to do without him? He couldn't take all the demons on his own. Not to mention, when Sinclair finally did get back, he'd be pissed at him for being gone so long.

Blowing his bangs out of his face, Sin turned back to Sefton. "I find it hard to believe that there's really not a way out of this city." Although, since arriving he had encountered many things that before he would have found "hard to believe."
