Zach. In the kitchen. With the knife. (Today, why not.) polarisation June 11 2010, 03:15:12 UTC
Sefton hadn't intended to stay in the kitchen long - after all, he'd just come in for a cup of water and since when had that ever taken any amount of time? He paused when he saw the man in the kitchen, opting to pull the headphones down around his neck and pause the music (he'd been listening to it a lot lately, though he wasn't sure why).

Unsure if he had been spotted yet or not, Sefton decided to simply edge around and grab a glass while staying out of the way of - Benjamin? Or was this the cook, Zach? - though, he ended up trying to steal a glance at whatever he was working on. It smelled good, at least.

Zach didn't acknowledge Sefton's presence; not a nod, not a greeting, focused on the vegetables he was cutting. Dicing, really, rapid-fire knifework that transformed carrots into little orange cubes. In the oven were the first couple burritos he was working on -- probably responsible for the smell.

"What do you know about cooking?" he asked, suddenly.

"Uh," Sefton said. It was more of a placeholder than an actual answer. What did he know about cooking? Whatever he knew, he had learned from his mother when he had been much younger and less attentive. He realized that, while he didn't know very much, summarizing what he did know was more difficult than it should have been.

Moving to the sink to fill the glass, he turned the faucet on and replied, "Don't put all the sugar in at once, cut away from your hand... burning things is bad?"

"Oh god," muttered Zach, "I don't know why Ben thought this was a good idea."

He sighed, and turned to Sefton. "Noodles. Do you know how to make noodles?"

Sefton rolled his eyes at that. "Sure," he replied, trying to keep from seeming too incompetent. "Boil water, put 'em in?"

All right, next question. "How about eggs? Scrambled, poached, hard-boiled, soft-boiled, sunny-side up?"

He tended to have a harder time of cracking eggs than most people, so he had only ever learned one simple thing to do with them. "I... can hard-boil 'em," Sefton answered.

Zach nodded at the stove. "Go ahead," he said. "Let me watch you."

Eggs were in the fridge, which he was pretty sure Sefton already knew.

He hesitated, momentarily, by taking a drink - it was what he had come here for, after all - and then moved to the fridge. "Eggs?" he asked before opening the door, giving a glance to Zach. "Or noodles?"

"Eggs," said Zach. "Go for eggs first."

He was just going to watch, for now. See if Sefton was tentative, afraid of the stove (like that one cook he'd trained back in Austin -- bad experience, all around), if he tried to show off.

If Sefton was afraid of the stove, he didn't show it. Instead, he simply nodded, retrieved four eggs and grabbed a small pot and lid from one of the cupboards. While that filled with water, he reached over to flick one of the burners on to about medium temperature, only being careful thanks to the burritos in the oven already heating the stove.

That done, he set the eggs in the pot, placed the lid on and put it on the burner. There wasn't really anything to it (they were just boiled eggs, after all). Once everything was set up, he glanced around. Finding the timer, he reached to set it for what seemed like an appropriate amount of time.

Through all of this, Sefton maintained a subdued expression, but when he looked to Zach, he found it becoming somewhat unsure. Was he going to be graded now or what?

"Hmph."

Zach crossed his arms. "I can work with this," he said. "I can definitely work with this. Burritos, out of the oven, and onto these," gesturing at a couple of woven squares of fabric. "And then put the next two plates in."

He said them as though they were orders, not requests.

"In a couple weeks, you'll be having fun here," said Zach. "Cooking is awesome. Do you like Oprah?"

Sefton hesitated, mentally searching the kitchen for the hotpads he would need. He didn't mind the orders, since it made doing all of this more like a job than some sort of charity.

After a moment, he retrieved what he needed and began carefully extracting the burritos while giving Zach a confused look. "Oprah?" he asked. Was that some kind of food he'd never heard of?

"You know, the show?" asked Zach. "I mean, I don't like it. Really. It's kind of pretentious and what does it solve, anyway? Those people will go right back to their issues when they're done. It just makes good background noise. Shame that Bete Noire doesn't have TV stations, really. Studios, that sort of thing."

He was back to chopping vegetables.

After placing the other two plates into the oven, Sefton leaned against the counter (would have been sitting on it, if he didn't think Zach would get mad at him for doing so) and shrugged. "Never heard of it."

He simply watched the other continue his chopping for a moment before remembering to ask. "How long should they be in for?"

"Cheese melts, tortilla just barely browns, and then you've got it. Mostly white still, but has a little crunch to it. Don't try that with the frozen stuff, though, it's a little better a little rawer if only because it's so damn hard to bite into if you get it crunchy."

His tone of voice makes it clear what he thinks of frozen food.

He finishes, leans back against the counter. "Elijah wants me to ask you how you're doing."
