Moving through the crowd with her drink, Christine spotted the designer and decided to show him the result of his work.

"Hey!" she said, coming up in front of him. "How's it look now that it's on?" She twirled in a quick circle for him, bracelets jangling along her arms.

He considered her, his mouth twisting in contemplation.

And considered.

And considered...

And frowned, as though there was something wrong...

And then broke into a smile. "Kidding," he said. "You look beautiful."

Well what was this? Did she have a loose thread hanging down? Had she accidentally spilled something on herself? She was about to ask when he told her he was kidding and her mouth dropped open.

"You!" she exclaimed, giving him a playful shove in the shoulder. "Here I thought I'd ruined it somehow." Shooting him a fake look of displeasure, she sipped at her drink for a moment, then added, "Do I have to guess what you are? I feel you're an artistic representation of something, but I'm not sure what. A bird maybe?"

He laughed -- a quiet, genuine chuckle.

"Fire," he said. "Themed, with the three other people I came with." Personally, he wasn't as satisfied with his as he was with the way he'd designed for Katniss -- he was better at bringing out beauty in others than he was in himself. But none of the costumes were shabby, and they enjoyed them, and he enjoyed them, and that was what mattered. "Not my best work," he admitted.

"You probably didn't have a lot of time though, did you? You made my costume, and probably a few other peoples' right? Besides," she added as an afterthought, gesturing to him with her drink, "I think you look comfortable, and that's the most important thing."

She was grateful he'd made her costume comfortable to wear. Some people appeared to be squeezed so tightly into their costumes that she could just imagine the marks that would be on their skin when they finally peeled them off.

"Are you having a good time?"

And some of the costumes were so completely awful that Cinna had a hard time looking directly towards them.

"I am," he admitted. "I'd never heard of this holiday before, but I think I like it."

"It seems right up your alley. People pretend to be somebody else and have to display that through what they wear."

Or what they don't wear, as she noticed some people weren't wearing too much at all. She thought she recognized Snow White, but she didn't remember the innocent princess wearing a bright yellow bra and ruffled blue skirt cut up to mid-thigh.

"I prefer bringing out who they are through what they wear," he told her. "It's about showing the part of a person that you can't see on the outside. And creating something beautiful, in the process."

His mouth twisted, wry. "Though I don't mind this either," he said. "What's a genie? I never managed to ask you."

"That's good for the other 364 days a year," Christine agreed. "It's just on this day we pretend to be someone we're not."

She looked down at herself briefly. "Ah. They come from stories set in the Middle East. They grant wishes to humans. So basically they're all powerful, but the kicker is that some are bound to an object, and whoever gets their hands on the object is the genie's master, and the genie can only grant wishes for them."

A very powerful slave, he thought. He gave a nod, slow. "I suppose people find that reassuring, as a legend," he wondered, out loud. "The thought that they could have so much power in their hands, and yet not have to wield it themselves."

"Yeah," she agreed, pursing her lips in thought. "People want things they don't really have to work for either. Oh well. Tonight? I'm a master-less genie. Though my wish-granting abilities are inhibited at the moment."

Looking down into her glass, she added jokingly, "Maybe if I drink more it'll unleash my powers."
