Damon was sitting in the parlor, his feet up on the coffee table, his fingers bridged in front of his chest. It was the only room, aside from his own, that felt really safe these days. All the rest of the rooms in the villa had Bonnie's fingerprints, in the forms of doilies and etchings of trees and other girlie and/or druidic tokens. But the parlor, it was basically his man cave. A man cave without a flatscreen TV or girlie calendar, but definitely his. It was less depressing than the rest of the place.

At first, Damon had had some mixed feelings about revealing the location of the villa to Jack. It probably had something to do with the fact that everyone he had been working so hard to protect had been screaming irrationally at him lately. A part of him did want to curl up into a ball and just drink them all away. But a larger part of him was determined to prove Spike wrong. He was not a brooder. He was fucking Damon Salvatore. He loved life and he loved living it ( ... )

"Maybe once or twice," Jack said in a cryptic tone, but with a facial expression that wasn't cryptic at all.

"There's no city like it in the universe, you know," he revealed to Damon. "What self-respecting time traveler wouldn't visit it in its heyday?"

"I knew it!" Damon laughed. Probably for the first time in a good, solid month. He took a sip of his drink, leaning back comfortably in his chair. "We might even have crossed paths at some point. After I died, I spent about several solid years in Venice. Right at the height of the courtesans. There was this one I will never forget. Tullia d'Aragona." She hadn't been very pretty, but that woman really knew how to work it.

He frowned thoughtfully. "It must be cool, being able to go through time, watching history play out when you already know the ending. It's like a movie only...real."

"Oh, believe me," Jack told him plainly. "If I had ever seen you before, I would remember."

There was no naughty twinkle in his eye, no smirk, no flirty little smile. It was the simple truth. Damon was stunning to look at. Jack would have noticed him.

Jack took a thoughtful sip of his wine as Damon spoke next.

"I had a lot of fun in my traveling days. I had some of the best days of my life."

He looked at Damon.

"Sometimes I miss it, but... I'm not sure I could go back."
