Rory was nearly to the end of his two free weeks, and aware of it, but hadn't settled himself in enough to find a job yet. So he came down, sheepish but present, hands in his pockets, poking around the lobby before coming to the front desk.

Sefton looked up when the man drifted toward the desk instead of heading outside or to one of the other rooms. Part of it was his paranoia at how close people got to him, while the rest was simply him keeping his attention on the job at hand.

He didn't recognize the man, but that was hardly surprising. Sefton had been pulling minimum duty at the hostel two weeks prior thanks to Lance's insistence that he stick around the shelter after seeing that magic mirror.

"Can I help you?"

"Uh, yeah. Yes. You work here?"

Because no offense, Sefton, but you look like the manager's kid.

He resisted the urge to roll his eyes. It was a fair judgment, that someone as young as himself wouldn't be working in a place like this, much less have such an important position in it.

"Yeah, I do," he answered instead, shifting into a more attentive position. "What's the problem?"

"Who do I need to talk to about getting an... an extension or something, or a grace period on starting to pay rent?"

"You can talk to me." Sefton frowned. "Two weeks already up?"

"Yeah. And I'm not... working yet. Is there some kind of work-trade I can do? I'm a phy- a nurse, or okay with tools, and stuff like that."

"Actually, there is," Sefton said, running a hand through his hair in slow consideration. "Yeah, there is. We've got a doctor on staff in the clinic. No handyman." That was different from an electrician, right? It would certainly be easier than contracting professionals every time something little needed repair, even if this guy wasn't licensed at it. "Could still put you in the clinic if you wanted, though."

"I'd rather be, yeah. If that's okay. I mean, I met the guy upstairs brewing... god knows what. He's not your doctor, is he?"

Now, Sefton did roll his eyes. "No, he's not. Dr. Saunders lives somewhere else," he explained. "He's just a resident.

"Pay's not gonna be a whole lot, 'cause you'll be working for board, too," he continued, standing. "You okay with that?"

"Yeah, definitely. I hope I'm not going to be staying long enough to need a lot of money. He was burning nightshade up there the other day. Might want to make sure he's not, you know, trying to poison anyone."

"Nightshade?" repeated Sefton. Something bad, judging by the way Rory continued. "Uh-just a minute." He moved away from the desk, stepping into the office to grab a sheaf of papers (not terribly thick, thankfully) and returned to place it on the desk between them. Now he was ready for an answer.

"It's a plant. A lot of plants, actually. Potato's a nightshade, but he was probably... I don't know for sure. Belladona, maybe? Or sunberry?"

Reaching for a pen to place on the contract, Sefton asked, "And it's... poisonous?" He knew magic was somewhat involved in whatever it was Snape was doing up there, but was he going to have to go have a talk with the potions master before their scheduled meeting time?

"Toxic, in the wrong quantity. I mean, people used to use them for medicines, until better things came along. He got really violent when I asked about what he was doing, though."

"Violent how?"

Sefton doubted it was to the same degree as Claire shooting at Conrad, but there was really no way to tell. Ugh. Just how much trouble was Snape going to be?
