Christine carried a food tray past the guards and into Sirius's room. She had taken a special interest in him after hearing what had happened. The fact that a man who could disappear and reappear in a different location at will was voluntarily staying in jail spoke a lot about his character. The refusing to eat thing, well that was just stupid.

She headed over to Sirius's bedside, setting down the tray on the small rolling table off to the side.

"And how is the patient today?"

He couldn't really help it, considering he'd thought the entire famine was his fault until the Magistrate's arrival. But now, he accepted any food he was given rather gratefully.

He offered Christine a smile. "More coherent, I think. What's on the menu today?"

"Let's see. There's apple juice, meatloaf -- which may or may not contain any actual meat -- mashed potatoes, green beans, aaaand," here she held up a plastic tub and jiggled it, "Green jello!" It was about as much excitement as she could muster for hospital food, but every little bit helped.

"But before you dig into this delicious meal, I'm here to do a blood pressure reading and get your temperature, ok?"

Sirius chuckled. "I'd eat anything, at this rate. And by all means, poke and prod away." He appreciated her enthusiasm and general cheerfulness. It was a welcome change from the prison guards.

"You're in luck," she replied, setting down the jello and moving to wheel over the gear she'd need, "there's not much poking and prodding involved in this. Which is surprising for 21st century medicine." She took his arm, wrapping the blood pressure cuff around and turning on the machine.

He nodded, cooperatively letting her do what she wished. "I'm from 1984, actually, but technology in general's a bit beyond me," he admitted. "We've got magic for this sort of thing, too."

"Really? Do you guys have hospitals where you're cured with magic?" It was fascinating to her the sorts of things magic could do.

The cuff tightened around his arm and she prepared the thermometer to go under his tongue, though she wouldn't stick it there until she'd given him the chance to respond. She wasn't a dentist, after all.

"St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries," Sirius informed her, nodding. Then he sat while she took his temperature and blood pressure, trying not to fidget.

"St. Mungo's," she repeated, the side of her mouth quirked up in a smile as she tried not to outright laugh at the name. Once she had recorded his blood pressure and removed the cuff, she took out the thermometer and recorded his temperature too.

"And what sort of magical maladies do wizards suffer from?"

"All sorts of things, really. Artefact accidents, creature-induced injuries, magical diseases, potions and plant poisonings, spell damage, etc. Of course, there's the normal stuff, too." They just had potions and things for it instead of Muggle medicine.

"Oh gosh, spell damage? What sorts of spells?" She gestured for him to go ahead and sit up to eat his meal.

"I'd be here all day listing the sort of spells you could be damaged from," Sirius chuckled. "Not that I'm not planning to be here all day anyway, but you'd get bored."

With that, he started in on his meal. He ate slowly, pacing himself...like he'd been starved like this before, and knew what to do.

"Sounds about as dangerous as space travel, the way my friend tells it." Honestly, after the hundredth or so time McCoy launched into a rant about bleeding eyeballs and exploding bodies, she had had enough.

"Well, enjoy your meal. Save that jello for last."

Sirius raised an eyebrow, ignoring that part about saving the desert for last.

"Who's your friend? I've got friends who talk about space travel, too. ...Or I did, at least." He wasn't sure if he really counted as a friend anymore, for Jim or the Doctor.

"His name's Leonard McCoy. He's a doctor here, and he was my boss back home." She moved about the room, straightening up a bit, but looked back over her shoulder at her charge. "You know him?"
