Walking home from work, Christine is focused on her path and moves at a fast clip. Even though this part of the city is better than most, the whole place is dangerous and she doesn't like to linger.

Waiting to cross the street, her eyes drift across and spot Tony, standing alone. That's an immediate red flag to her, because he shouldn't be alone. Where was Uhura? Or one of his caretakers?

The Walk sign lights up and she jogs across the street to him.

"Tony? It's Christine. Do you remember me?"

People walk around him and cars pass by on the street, but Tony just stands there; just stands still. His eyes flicker from each thing with a wild sort of awe--the stoplight, the signs, the lit windows at the top of skyscrapers, the busy people with hats pulled low under the summer sun. The sheer sight of it assaults all five of his senses, all at once.

It takes time to gain his attention. His eyes are unfocused, a little see-through. (When a man waited beside him at the crosswalk earlier, Tony looked to him and said, with sudden revelation, "You're a bad man." The guy sneered and threw his cigarette butt at Tony's bare feet.) But he blinks and they clear when he finally turns to Christine. Her voice cuts through the rest. He refocuses. "I remember you," he says.

Her brow furrows in worry until he speaks, and then she lets out a breath in relief. He shouldn't be out here alone, and she's wondering if he wandered away while his handler's back was turned.

"Good, I'm glad you do. But I don't think Uhura would be pleased to see you out here alone. Do you know where she is?" If that was a fact he was able to comprehend, then he could tell her, and Christine could take him back to Uhura. If not, she would just have to see if she could get him back to the mansion.

His attention wanders still. A car rushes by and draws his eyes away from her. He stares at it disappearing down the road, but his brow wrinkles, worried, as Christine's words process past the fog around his mind that the voices create. "She said she would be back soon," Tony tells her.

"Where did she say that to you? Where you two inside the mansion? Or were you out on the street?" In either case, Christine felt the best solution was to take him back to the mansion. It was where he was comfortable and maybe Uhura was there, worried sick.

"Why don't we go back home, hmm?" She hated calling that place 'home,' but she wanted Tony to understand. Home was safe.

"It isn't home," he says, and in those few words, something in his tone changes. Something stronger. Tony looks around again, squinted against the sun, and the strength slips back into blankness with minute confusion. "I'm looking for something," he says then, almost amazed at the thought.

"You're right," she said, slipping her arm around his. "It's not really home. just the place we're staying." It struck her as surprising that he had said that with such conviction. Maybe he wasn't as blank as she first thought.

"What are you looking for, Tony?"

He doesn't answer, not at first. First, he looks down to her arm held around his, his own hanging limp, and then to her face. Looking for answers, looking somewhere. Inside, he's nothing. Just an empty container for the Magistrate's power to fill.

But if he could just find the right path--

Tony says, "I don't know." The stoplight--green, yellow, red--reminds him of the light in his chest. When he adds on, "I need to find it," with some finality, he takes a step away, slipping from her.

Startled, she nods and tries to step closer without startling him. "Ok, it's ok, Tony. I want to help you find it. Maybe I can help you remember what it is?"

Tony listens; just keeps walking as she catches up to him at a slow but steady pace, wide eyes roaming over the sights. The sun beats down on them, the air wavy from heat. The concrete has turned the bottom of his feet red and sore, but he keeps walking.

"I can't remember," he murmurs. He sounds sad.

"Sometimes that happens," she replies gently from beside him. "But maybe it'll come back to you in time. If you don't know what you're looking for, then you can't walk around aimlessly." Again, she reaches for him, but this time for his hand instead of his arm. "Uhura's probably worried. We should go back to the mansion."

A Doll, any normal one, can be guided by the hand or a touch on their back--if told they need to return somewhere, they will follow without a word. But it's not right. He's not right.

Any tug on his hand, any slowing down on her part, and he stops and turns to her. "How will I know what it is if I don't look for it?" he asks. It's simple to him. He needs to look for it.

It's odd, talking with Tony. For someone with a child-like mind, he doesn't always behave as a child would. At least not yet. He's not throwing a tantrum or whining, but he's also resisting her suggestion head on.

"You don't know where to start looking though. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The best thing to do if you want to find this thing is to go back to the mansion, get something to eat, go to sleep, and when you wake up you'll be able to think clearer." Gently, she tugged his hand.

"You look exhausted and you won't be able to do a proper search this way."

The conflict wars on his face in the form of a scrunched brow and worried eyes. The inside of the mansion is nice and cool, not this sticky heat. It has food, and water, and friends. Outside is loud and unsafe. But the tug on his hand doesn't move him. His feet stay rooted, because there's something important that he needs. Something that he's missing, and the whispers might lead him to it.

Tony Stark was always so stubborn, when he put his mind to an idea.

So Tony shakes his head and says, "I can follow them," before he steps forward. If she doesn't hold on, his hand will slip from hers.

"Follow what?" She rushes to keep a grip on his hand, worried about losing him in the maze of streets and buildings. "I don't think you should do anything until you've rested."

He waits for the pull from the inside, for direction from the city, looking to dark alleyways and the sidewalk and road as he walks. It tugs him to different people he passes by, even a little to Christine, but none of them are what he needs.

"The voices," he explains. "They tell me where to go."
