Prompt 015.2 for lightyearsahead

2. A sentient plant that communicates with flowers.

He always liked flowers.

194 always noticed that about 146, back before they chose names for themselves. Before he was "Gary Seven" and his friend was "Septos". Before they had cats and before they had assignments meant to last more than a week. When they worked together, he would always take a moment to stop and smell them. The man was a walking proverb, a beam of warm, contented light in the shadow of the ominous and duty obsessed human. One ever dedicated to his job. The other enjoying it as he performed his work, one day at a time.

That was probably why Gary Seven wound up in the bustling, primitive metropolis of New York to keep him constantly busy. Septos was stationed on his own miniature planet, with an entire lush surface world that he could hide from the rest of the galaxy. His own giant garden to nurture and grow.

It was probably why when they first were sent to Cromwell Beta, it was Septos who noticed the little vines creeping after them first. Mr. Seven had assumed them aggressive, watching them warily and was prepared to cut them back before they began to entangle the pair. Which was what Mr. Seven expected. Instead, Septos had gently knelt beside them, ran his fingers along the petals and watched the subtle play of color on the stamen.

They were talking to them, and Mr. Seven would have destroyed them if Septos hadn't taken notice.

The Aegis had never warned them about this, and when he stooped beside of the Vulcanoid man, he couldn't help but notice a look of contentment on his face. He was noble to have spent his life serving the Aegis, because at that moment, Mr. Seven had known that it wasn't his true calling. Hands that gentle deserved to be growing the future, not roughing it into perspective.

He was glad for the chance to work alongside of him, and it was a memory that plagued him in the darker hours after seeing him broken and bloody and pleading for rescue after a Romulan's hostility. He should have spent more centuries in his garden, or on that planet talking to the growing fruit. Not blinking out there, left behind to be destroyed along with his flowers.
