I have to say no just based on your Johnny Cash answer. Johnny Cash was NOT punk at all. He stole a lot of "his" songs. He hardly wrote anything by himself, and the songs that he did write were either co-written or he had a ghostwriter. Don't get me wrong, I love Johnny Cash but he's way overrated, and to top it off, just because he did drugs and flipped off a camera once, doesn't make him punk.
He was actually a really quiet, somber person. I don't know how many punks I can say that about.
Most old musicans stole there songs, you can't say that means he's not punk. I was talking about the way he was. I actually know a few punks I can say that about, just because they like the music and are into the scene doesn't mean they're running around screaming at people and acting like morons. He took stands that weren't popular and thought for himself, he did what he wanted. Sorry, but just because someone isn't a total fucking in your face douchebag their whole lives doesn't mean they aren't punk.
Well, to me you need to be associated with the punkrock movement to be a punk...Seeing as how punk didn't exist when he was around, that is what decides my opinion on it.
If you want to talk about PUNK country stars, you might want to consider Hank Williams, he was an alcoholic and pill popper way before Cash, was cancelling dates and being a no show, David Allan Coe spent half of his life in prison and was actually on death row for a while. i mean, the list goes on. but no one considers them to be "punk before punkrock".
so really I guess I just wonder what it is about Johnny Cash that makes people think he's so punk when first of all, people did the same shit way before him, and even at the same time, where doing worse shit. I dont know. It doesnt make sense to me.
I like Hank Williams, but his songs are more about girls and being lonely and very very country themed things. Johnny Sang a lot of songs about the establishment and how it's fucking over the youths. Even his support the troops songs still are some what anti-war and pro-youth. He sang about a lot of things that were very typical country, but he also took some big stands that most country musicans wouldn't take today or back then. And that whole standing for what you believe in and thinking for yourself thing is what punk is supposed to be about, not all this mohawks and bondage pants because my cool friends have have them shit. But I guess that's really what punk is these days, which is why I never have and never will label myself a punk even though I'm constantly at shows and listening to the music. It's just another label that's been taken over by kids that don't know what the word means. Off topic, but I guess I'm sort of sympathising with your anti-punk sentiments.
