this prompt on exopromptmeme #21. I have a soft spot for krisoo so I hope I did this well.
Before Kyungsoo, Kris was a lot of things. Kris was confident; Kris was smart; Kris was the guy everyone wanted to be around. But Do Kyungsoo - fucking Do Kyungsoo with his sweet smiles and big eyes - went ahead and ruined everything for him.
It’s not really Kyungsoo’s fault. You can only be at fault so much for being born gorgeous. And Kyungsoo is. Kris does everything he can to keep his mind off of Kyungsoo - he has more important things. Like school. Yeah, school. School is much more important to think about - and with a new semester coming up, Kris decides to put behind him all thoughts of Do Kyungsoo.
He knew it would be hard considering their mutual friendships. It’s hard to find Kyungsoo without Baekhyun by his side and Kris does like Baekhyun. Jongin, Kris’ best friend, especially likes Baekhyun, which is how Kris met Kyungsoo in the first place. But that’s okay. Kris will just distance himself from his friends for a bit until he is 100% over Do Kyungsoo.
If that ever happens. But Kris is determined to make it work.
When school starts, Kris is happy that he almost all major classes this semester. He loves his major; he loves working with computers, messing around with lines of code until he can get the computer to do what he wants. It’s control and creativity all in one and Kris loves it. Outside of those classes, though, Kris has a history class. Which is what he’s not excited about. History has never been his strong point as he’s gone through school and he’s been putting off this class for as long as he could.
It’s at a shitty time, too. It’s eight in the morning and Kris saunters into the lecture hall. He’s still mostly asleep. He’s pretty sure whatever it is he’s wearing, it doesn’t match, and he didn’t have a chance to shave so he’s sure he looks like a complete mess. He sure, but doesn’t know, though, as he hasn’t taken the time to look at himself in a mirror yet today.
Kris takes a seat in one of the few spots that are still open - it’s half way down, end of the row. He sits down just in time as the teacher walks in and begins to talk without any sort of warning. Kris begs himself to wake up and listen and learn, but eight in the morning is not a good time and he was up late the night before getting shitfaced with Yixing (which was obviously a very stupid idea). But Kris does his best to at least hear what the professor is saying, even if he doesn’t totally understand it.
The class is half over before Kris realizes who he’s sitting next to. He’s not sure how he didn’t notice before - too tired, he assumes. His body goes rigid as he notices and Kris is no longer even trying to listen to his professor. Why does Kyungsoo have to be in his class?
Somehow, Kris manages to make it through the rest of class, determined to run off as soon as the teacher is finished. He has some code to write anyway. It’s not that he’s running away from Kyungsoo, just that he’s running to go and get some homework done. That’s totally it.
Naturally, Kris is unable to make it out. He stands up and hears Kyungsoo call his name behind him. Kris has no choice but to turn around and great his dongsaeng and tries to put on the best smile he can to face him with.
“Aren’t you so excited about this class, Sunbae?” Kyungsoo asks with a grin and Kris feels like Kyungsoo’s reached into his chest and pulled out his heart. Kyungsoo’s voice alone was so sweet and smooth but when he said sunbae, it was too much for Kris to handle. He manages to nod, biting his tongue. This was not the time to start freaking out and going off about how cute Kyungsoo is. Not the time.
They walk out of the classroom and Kyungsoo continues to talk. Kris is only taking in some of what the other is saying. He hadn’t known Kyungsoo was a history major or that he was so interested in this kind of stuff. His voice sounds so light and airy as he talks. Kris can tell history makes him happy, which in turns makes Kris happy as well.
“I don’t have another class for a bit. Did you already have breakfast?”
“No. I don’t normally have breakfast,” Kris replies.
“Oh, okay,” Kyungsoo replies, his eyes flickering down to the ground. But soon they’re back up and Kyungsoo is smiling wide again. “Well, in that case I’ll see you on Thursday, Sunbae!” Kris watches as Kyungsoo bounds off in the opposite direction and wonders if Kyungsoo was going to invite him to breakfast and Kris was just too stupid to not catch on.
“I hate you.” It’s a month later and Jongin and Kris are hanging out alone for the first time since school has started back. “I really fucking hate you,” Kris says again. They’ve just gotten out of a movie - a really sappy college romance that had Kris thinking about Kyungsoo the whole way through.
Things haven’t gotten any easy through the past month. You would think they would be - that Kris would eventually become used to Kyungsoo’s presence and not feel like he was going to faint each time the boy talked. But that’s always how he ends up feeling. It doesn’t help that Kyungsoo refuses to just call him Kris - or even hyung. No. It is always “Kris Sunbae!” and it makes Kris feel sick.
“It’s not my fault you’re too nervous to ask Kyungsoo out!” Jongin replies back.
“No, but it’s your fault that I met him. Maybe if you and Baekhyun had started fucking sooner--”
“Can you not talk about me and Baekhyun fucking? That’s not something I want you to be thinking about.”
“It’s not like I picture it or anything! But you guys are kind of loud sometimes.”
“Fuck you,” is Jongin’s only reply as he laughs. “You’re just jealous that I’m getting some ass and you’re not,” Jongin adds a few minutes later. Kris reaches over and punches his friend in the arm. But he does have a point. Kris needs to do something to get Kyungsoo, but nothing he does works. Not that he’s really doing much more outside of drooling over him each time he’s around.
“How am I supposed to ask him out, though? He always has girls around him. Is he even gay?”
Jongin laughs and pulls Kris closer. “If you tell anyone this, I will kill you. And you better not let Baekhyun know I told you this, but I guess there were a few times with the two of them got drunk and they’ve sucked each other off? So I guess that’s proof.”
“Seriously?” Kris can barely get the word out. He can’t even picture Kyungsoo that way. He’s been so infatuated with the boy, but just the idea of him being shirtless makes Kris blush. He can’t picture Kyungsoo doing those things… but now he is and these are not the thoughts he wants to have while in the middle of the street with Jongin.
Puppies, he tells himself. Think of cute little puppies. Thankfully that helps get Kris’ mind off of Kyungsoo’s dick (and the thought of his in Kyungsoo’s perfect mouth).
“As for how you get him, I don’t know. You can always get him drunk like I did with Baekhyun. Apparently it’s a pretty good way to get what you want.” Jongin winks and Kris sighs. He’s not gonna get Kyungsoo drunk just so he can make out with him or some shit. That’s not what he wants either. He wants to hold hands with Kyungsoo, he wants to kiss him, yes, but soft and sweet. He wants to watch the sun set and take Kyungsoo to the beach. He wants Kyungsoo to meet his parents and he wants to be able to walk around campus, holding hands, and kissing quickly when they part for classes.
Kris has never wanted this. He’s always been one for quick hooks up (which is how he met Jongin in the first place). He’s never wanted to be cute - he’s never wanted to date anyone, but with Kyungsoo, Kris is so out of sorts that he wants to do so many things that just aren’t him.
It’s not to bad, though, he decides. Or, at least, it wouldn’t be if he had any idea how to do any of these things with Kyungsoo.
Kris decides to try Joonmyeon next for help. He’s been dating Jongdae since high school so he obviously has to have some kind of idea on how the whole relationship stuff works. Kris isn’t sure why he even bothered with asking Jongin in the first place. Joonmyeon was obviously the better choice.
They go out for coffee. Of course, Jongdae comes along. Kris doesn’t mind Jongdae exactly, but he does take every chance he can to make fun of Kris (which happens more than Kris would like to admit). It’s okay, though, since maybe Jongdae will be able to help.
Kris goes and orders everyone’s drinks and they settle into a table, the couple across from Kris. He hands everyone their respective cups and waits for everyone to kind of settle in before he brings up Kyungsoo.
When he does, Jongdae bursts into laughter. “You like Kyungsoo?” he chokes out, laughing as if he’s heard the best joke in the world. “Do Kyungsoo? Fuck man, that is never going to work.”
“Jongdae,” Joonmyeon sings sweetly to his boyfriend, wrapping his arm around him. “Be nice.” His voice is sharp, but Kris knows it won’t make any difference. Joonmyeon likes to pretend he has some control over his boyfriend but everyone knows he doesn’t.
Jongdae smiles at Kris and thankfully doesn’t say anything more. Kris hesitates to speak again - he doesn’t want Jongdae to laugh even more. He feels stupid enough already. But he came here to get help and help is what he’s going to get. Kris smiles slightly and takes a big drink of his tea (which burns going down his throat and Kris whimpers).
“I was hoping you could help me ask him out. I… I’ve never really done it before and I don’t know how.” Kris’ voice is shaky and he looks down when he sees Jongdae grin and stifle a laugh. At least he’s not completely laughing at me, Kris thinks, but he still feels so stupid. What kind of college senior doesn’t know how to ask someone out?
“This is so great, Kris!” Joonmyeon giggles. “It’s so nice to see you actually interested in someone. You’re growing up!”
Kris shakes his head. “You sound like my mom,” he snorts out, which only makes Joonmyeon smile wider. Kris sighs. “So can you help me?”
“Of course!” Joonmyeon beams. “I’ll think of something and get back to you, okay?”
Kris nods fervently. Joonmyeon was the best choice. They finish their drinks with a decent amount of silence, only really broken with Jongdae comments on how Kris’ roots are showing and how bad it makes him look. But Kris doesn’t mind; he’s too high on the thought of him and Kyungsoo being together.
It’s a week later and Kris hasn’t heard back from Joonmyeon. He’s worried that his friend has forgotten or that Jongdae’s convinced him that getting Kyungsoo to like him is an impossible task. Kris has woken up early, nervous over seeing Kyungsoo, and has too much time before class. He actually bothers to pick out a decent outfit and brush his hair and teeth. Kris feels good as he leaves his apartment and makes his way to class.
On his way there, his phone rings and Kris almost has a heart attack when he sees it’s Joonmyeon calling. He answers and Joonmyeon’s voice is so lovely and happy for so early in the morning. “Kris! I’ve got it. I know how to get Kyungsoo to date you. Can you meet me?” Kris has a little of time before class and agrees, Joonmyeon thankfully able to come and meet him by his class.
When he arrives, Joonmyeon is smiling wider than Kris ever could. He hands over a pile of notecards and tells him, “Just read these to him and I know it’ll go well! Kyungsoo just wants to know you care about him so be sure to be expressive when you talk, Kris. You can do this!”
Kris nods as he looks down at the cards. He doesn’t read them, though, his eyes glazing over. He hugs Joonmyeon goodbye before he goes into class and settles into his seat next to Kyungsoo right before the professor starts to talk about genocide.
Between the topic of discussion and his nervousness over talking to Kyungsoo, Kris’ head is a mess. The class is over and he hasn’t read over the notecards once. Kris and Kyungsoo walk out together as they always do and when they reach to the point where they normally part, Kris asks, “Can we go somewhere and talk for a minute?”
“Sure!” Kyungsoo smiles and the two head off to the quad. They sit down at a bench and Kris is silent. He keeps opening his mouth to start talking, but it just isn’t happening. “What’s up, Sunbae?” Kyungsoo questions after a minute of silence.
It’s now or never, Kris thinks. “So… uh…” he starts out and then looks down at his notecards, which are shaky in his hands and hard to read. “Did you, uh, did you fall out of heaven because, um…” Kris’ hands shake and drop the cards, Kris watching as they hit the ground.”Shit, fuck,” he swears. “Oh god, I’m so sorry. You’re - you’re just so pretty. I’m sorry.” Kris has never felt so stupid in his whole fucking life. Never felt so stupid and pathetic and lame and he just wants to get up and run away.
So he starts to. He starts to stand up when Kyungsoo grabs hold of his elbow. Kris looks down and Kyungsoo is looking at him wide-eyed, smiling. “You think I’m pretty?” he asks, his voice so sweet and smooth and… Kris is soon sitting back down on the bench, nodding.
Kyungsoo’s hand slides down until it’s holding Kris’ hand. Kyungsoo’s hands are so soft, delicate, and Kris loves the feeling. He’d thought about holding hands with Kyungsoo so much but actually holding his hand feels better than anything he could have imagined.
He just stares at Kyungsoo, unsure if he should say anything or not. He never really did ask him out on a date. He didn’t really tell him much of anything, instead just turning into a complete mess. But that mess got his hand to hold Kyungsoo’s so that’s good enough for him.
Kyungsoo is the one who actually asks Kris out. They’re studying for their history midterm and while they’ve been holding hands nonstop for two weeks, they haven’t actually gone out once.
Kris is doing everything he can to actually study, but Kyungsoo keeps moving closer until suddenly he’s reaching up and using his fingers to trail across his neck, sending goosebumps all over Kris. “Why haven’t you asked me out yet?” Kyungsoo inquires, whispering into Kris’ ear.
“I… I didn’t know I was supposed to,” Kris confesses, blush spreading across his face (which only gets worse when Kyungsoo starts to tug at his earlobe with his teeth).
“I guess I’ll have to do it for you,” Kyungsoo whispers before moving his head away from Kris’. “Will you go out with me, Sunbae?”
Kris smiles and chuckling says, “If we’re dating, you really can’t keep calling me sunbae, Kyungsoo.”
“Is that a yes then?” Kyungsoo questions, his voice thick, as he leans forward and grabs hold of Kris’ shirt collar.
“You bet it is.”
