I think you're confusing a phrase used to describe something with the superstitious connotation that can go with it.

Then what do you suggest saying instead? One that embodies the meaning while blending in with simple speech?

I never said you couldn't say it, I just said I didn't believe it. But that's no longer important. Can you tell me more about this watch? I think it was only just beginning before I left and I'd like more information on it, if you don't mind.

Yes of course. Well... it's very much like any town or neighborhood watch. Our focus is on helping the community by being able to give aid, assist with monster outbreaks and other general safety concerns. So far we have simply been playing it by ear.
