Wonderful! I can really feel Daniel's sense of dissociation and his subsequent, albeit reluctant, connection with Jack. The French phrases fall quite naturally into the story. (They gave me a brief moment of yearning and regret for the long ago days when I spoke the language.) I like the small detail that this version of Jack still smokes. Great story.
