Hmmm ... Tumblr

Y'know, during April when I was really busy with the AtoZChallenge I only went to Tumblr 3 or 4 times ( Read more... )

I guess I've been pretty fortunate in that I mostly follow fandom blogs so I don't see a lot of the hate, but occasionally those things do sneak in. I can't imagine having a dash full of it :/

I agree that I miss the LJ days when people were more or less civil.
We are fortunate in that HP fandom still has a good presence here, but some fandoms have moved completely to tumblr and I hate it :(

See mostly I follow fandom blogs as well, but somehow it still seeps in. It all comes down to the difficulty of communicating on Tumblr I think - it's just not set up for talking. It's like Twitter - mostly shouting into a void. Tumblr has never felt like a community to me.

"it's just not set up for talking"

you are absolutely right there! and it's insanely frustrating. Especially getting into a new fandom :/

Oh yeah - I think the way it's set up makes it feel inherently cliquey.

I've been pretty fortunate on Tumblr, I guess, not having to deal with the hate. But then I've been lucky on that front on LJ too. I'm sorry you've had to deal with it.

Whenever I'm on Tumblr it feels like it's a powder keg and all it needs is a tiny spark to blow (and now I have Bonnie Tyler going round in my head :)).

I've never had to deal with the vitriol head on - Tumblr doesn't inspire me to make that much content, just share others', but it always seems to be there, popping up all over the place.

Yes, you have to be very aware on there what you say. And people are very quick to point fingers. I'd like to think it's because most of them are young but I remember when LJ's audience was that and I swear it wasn't as bad (at least where I hid).

I've got to the point where I just remove blogs from my feed if I feel they cross the line. I want my pretty and fic recs (weirdly there are some good blogs for that in certain fandoms on there). They can keep the drama.

I've seen some arguments on LJ and some wars over the years, but it never felt the same. Usually that seemed to happen on the periphery and the odd BNF had to be called out, but the mods on the comms often stopped it happening in the main fandom places ( ... )

I feel the same way about tumblr. Eventually I kinda had to get to a point where I had to deal with the fact that, yes, these people are my friends and I do love them dearly, but, holy shit, I do NOT need their negativity in my tumblr life and culled them away from there. I'd rather go and look at pretties than go and look at endless ire.

It seems to all boil down to the fact that communication is not something that is emphasised on Tumblr. I always felt on LJ people were much more ready to talk about things. It's like how everyone is always so amazed when two people manage to have a civilised conversation about an issue on Tumblr. That really says something about the atmosphere.

It's frustrating above anything else. LJ has always been more work, but so worth it. If they made posting pretties easier they might actually be able to drag some people back.

I agree with most of the comments here. Tumblr was not made for discussion, it's more pretty pictures and gifs for me but I find just looking at pretty and reblogging just isn't as satisfying as squeeing over something here on lj because I can read others reactions to a thing and it can be talked about in as you said a civil manner mostly because there are mods for comms and a certain nettiquete when on someone's lj.

I know exactly what you mean. Tumblr makes me feel more remote from the fandom than in it because it doesn't feel like I'm taking part. It was possible to lurk on LJ, but the interface encourages engagement much more.

I hate Tumblr. You're right, everyone there is rude. I'm not that fond of FaceBook either, politics seem to be the rant of the day. I miss the 'old days' of LJ were everyone was either polite or easily diverted, deleted or ignored. *sigh*

Me too, me too - maybe we can tempt some people over here and teach them what civilised blogging was all about :)

OMG, don't I wish? I used to get 70 to 100 emails about replies a day. Now ... I might get 10. Everyone ran to FaceBook to follow a couple of people. *sigh*

And a second peeve ... people who repost their Tweets. What the hell is that?

10 - wow, I get 1 or 2 - although, since I am trying to up my LJ use, I am hoping this will go up :) As far as I can tell everyone ran to Tumblr from my flist.

I repost my Tweets :) I do it because I try to tweet or retweet interesting links that people over here might find useful too. Saves having to do it all twice :)
