Comment from here - it's very US-centric. We don't tend to have big heating bills in Australia, and they tend to be just part of the usual electricity charge, not a separate oil-tank bill. Uni fees didn't come in until about 15 years ago, so you didn't need a trust fund to pay for them, and the majority of students commute. (I lived in a residential college but that was for a country Uni of which there are few). Cars for the kids are for the very very rich, as are credit cards. And it's unusual to have a phone or telly in your room.
And your dad was a Fulbrite? He's not Dolph Lundgren, is he?
There used to be a very strong correlation between education and privilege. It still exists, but at a much lower level and more widespread than, say, 30 years ago.
