I pose the threat of making myself look completely and totally nerdy, but c'est la vie. Sounds like a lot of interesting stuff. I hope that the program you have been redoing works better now, for the sake of the students. I know you have spent a great deal of time dealing with issues.
Sometime you will have to share with me the whole email thing. That just sounds so cool. (enters nerdiness) It would be cool to find out just how video, pics, etc get modified and encoded into text.

Perl regex's are amazing; hands down the most complete, easiest to use implementation I've seen, though Python is a reasonable second.
I like the do-what-I-mean constructions and so forth because I'm a lazy typist, but I have to agree that it makes for hard to read code.
Data structures are significantly more complicated than they need to be, especially objects.
Damn useful language though.
