Bad news

So I just got my laptop back. It was supposed to be getting a new hard drive but apparently it is too old and can't be upgraded.

The tech guy suggested that I get rid of all my music. This is not an option for me. I need my music on my laptop. I only use the family computer for downloading VM.

what if you got an external drive, or a large flash disk?

but if it's running badly, maybe getting a new one might be better. maybe you can a good second hand one?? there are sometimes good deals on ebay, and it might help save some money.

Yeah I'm looking into alternatives now. I'd really rather not get a new one if I don't have to.

External hard drives can be quite expensive though, much more so than a similar-sized internal drive.

Oh, and Brit: what exactly is the problem with the laptop? Getting a new hard drive generally doesn't make computers quicker. New HDD's are only useful if you're actually running out of storage space... if you want to make your laptop run faster I'd look into getting some more RAM, not a new hard drive. I'd also look at the programs that you have running in the background and that run on Windows start-up... often you have totally unnecessary things like "Adobe speed launch" in the background constantly taking up precious RAM.

In the end though, as sico_kitty said, it might be worth getting a new one. Sometimes with really old computers it's easier and cheaper to just buy a new one. You'll have to buy a new one eventually anyway, and probably before you finish uni and get a better-paying job, so why spend extra money now trying to make the old one last? :P (That's one rationalisation anyway!)
