The initial reaction is entirely unacceptable. As I said, people make mistakes all the time and even behind big companies, there are mostly people. If something like this happens, you need to take accountability for it and deal appropriately. Sigh!
If DDB Brazil is anything like us, then especially the stuff meant for the awards is being checked by senior staff (or even director or CCO level). I don't think how anybody would believe someone would buy it.
