That's awesome. I wish my students were that clever. I totally would've given partial credit for that.

Partial credit? Only partial credit? This is clearly the only correct answer. If the answer was supposed to be 5 cm, the question should have been “Find the value of x.”

This is a great illustration of why it is important to write good test questions. Technically, the student answered exactly what the question asked.

Yea. I suppose another correct answer would be to assume x = |x| and so x = (4 cm, 3 cm). But the answer is definately not 5 cm.
