Halloween, a festival... a sort of holiday from my world. Originally named All Hallow's Eve, it came before All Saints Day, which was dedicated to the saints of a particular, vastly practiced religion. It was a mixture of that religion's practices and the practices of pagan festivals. It has been practiced for centuries and has changed into 'Halloween' in my modern age.
Ancient superstition holds that October 31st is the night when the line between the worlds of the living and the dead is blurred and spirits cross over--which is completely ridiculous, of course.
Something along those lines. In my day and age, children dress up in costume and visit the houses of others where they're given candy--a very watered down echo of a time when people left out offerings to the spirits of the dead.
