I don't think the US exactly has a diplomatic corps. Most of the ambassadors tend to be people who donated a ton of money to the campaigns. Basically, they tend to buy their assignment. The more money, the better the country they are an ambassador to. Of course, that's not 100%. But, most of the European ambassadors are all well-healed donors to campaigns.
