Princess power

Something I hadn't banked on when becoming a princess is the magnetic hold I have over little girls.

We're now two-thirds of our way through the Yule revel season, and there's a definite trend of princess power. nusbacher's girls, who both knew me as a pre-royal person, were both extremely diligent in their curtseying, anytime I was even vaguely looking in ( Read more... )

Not to discount your not-inconsiderable charms, Your Highness, but perhaps the juggernaut Disney Princess marketing machine might have something to do with it...? ;)

That's what I'm getting at - it's not me, I'm just filling the ready-made princess-shaped hole in these little girls' minds. Even the 3 year old knew that a princess was someone special.

It is fun. And maybe knights get the same kick out of telling kids that yes, I'm a knight, but no I don't have a horse (except maybe Finvarr).

I was caught offguard by how powerful the effect was. I've seen it before in the Society, but I'm now on the receiving end, which is new.

I'd forgotten that queens tend to be evil and cackling...

I'm still waiting for a queen to go wild with the black and purple outfits...

(1) Because even before Disney, every fairy tale tells you that princesses are MAGIC.

(2) And princesses are GIRLS, like them, while queens are just boring old grownups.

(3) Because you're right there in front of them being REAL (a real person, anyway ;) which means that there is hope for them of someday actually becoming princesses themselves. (Little girls generally don't want to be Queen.)

(4) Also, for those who go through that stage, princess stories only have a little bit of icky boy stuff at the end, the rest is all Girl Power.

Glad you're enjoying it!

Arent' the Disney queens usually evil? More powerful than princesses, but not as virtuous (or likeable) and they're usually trying to kill the princesses, yes?

I have soooooo many (really terrible) opinions about the whole Disney thing and society's gendered bullshit that I can't even get started or I will choke to death on everything I want to say. But yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly in this area!

I met a friend the other day who has a 3 / 4 year old. She told me that her little girl wants to be a queen in pink with a big sword! I have to say despite the pink I was impressed!

Certainly Sir Vitus' little girl MC is a princess in pink with a sword, and has no hesitation in using it on her brother and her friends.

Her Barbie videos really make me cringe though - the princesses are perfectly dressed and coiffed, one in each hair-colour shade, with Barbie-ish figures, train in sword fighting in secret (apparently you can't tell anyone that you do combat) never argue in earnest, and win the day without ever raising a sweat. And yes, get the cool clothes and they guy at the end.
