I read a completely awesome book today for uni. Home, it was called, by Larissa Behrendt. It was beautiful really, about the impact of White Australians on Aboriginal Australia. It was told from many viewpoints and quite a few different times, but the one that stuck with me most was the story of Garibooli (whirlwind, in English) in 1918, who is ( Read more... )

Happened upon this while looking at your tags.

The story is awful, isn't it? People have always taken over populations and then punished them for it, which is really messed up. Sometimes I'll pass a deserted area and I'll think about the Native Americans who might have originally lived there. It's just so sad, really. That poor little girl - punished because of someone else's ignorance.

I'm not ashamed of being white, but I do worry about even my ancestors. Were they racist? Did they do bad things? I mean, I'm sure everyone's got at least one awful ancestor, but it still makes me uncomfortable, especially as some of the stuff that happened here wasn't even that long ago.
