Four Short PSAs

1. If your website has embedded audio or video set to autoplay, it is by default NSFW no matter what the content is. Don't do it. No matter how tempted you are to "set the stage" for your readers' "immersive" experience, reflect on the fact that they may be a) someplace or sometime wherewhen this is not appropriate, b) using an older/slower ( Read more... )

Looks like you need an [end-sub] after "either could happen...)"

Thanks for these tips, especially the one about cats' pads. Sounds like if I ever get a touchscreen, I'll need to cover it when I'm not using it. My cat likes to sleep on the desk.

Thanks, fixed it.

Not just the touchscreen/touchpads that you know about, either - my Wacom tablet has this additional little touch-sensitive spot on it for workspace navigation, even though the main tablet is only responsive to the stylus. Well, somebody hopped up on the desk and walked across it and everything went haywire and it took me forever to figure out what was keeping opening and closing windows on me!

1) For God's sake, YES. I *mostly* surf with headphones, with a decent connection--but not always. It's just not good manners to not let your visitor control what they see, when it's something that might eff up their computer. (And "You shouldn't be surfing at work," doesn't work as an excuse, either: what if you're surfing from home while the baby/cat/roommate is asleep? At least give me time to make sure my headphones are plugged in.)

2) Yes. Shakesville, which I otherwise like a lot, has a non-linky banner. They do have a "Home" link near the top of the page, which is okay--though I still prefer being able to click the masthead.

3) Ooh, thanks!

4) *snorfle*

And sometimes you *have* to surf at work - long time ago I was looking for tech solutions to some issue or other, and othis ne website had what sounded in the google link like what we needed, and I click and get this blaring jerky video that locks up my browser and forces a reboot! Maybe they had the answer to our problem, but I sure wasn't going to risk that again...

Yep. Not all surfing at work is slacking off.

Thanks for the links to Renderosity and Runtime DNA.

And you're right about everything else, too.
