Residential Raven

This morning there was a strange noise outside that sounded more mechanical than organic, a kind of grating/rasping noise like a very loud electric buzzer with its housing off. Given the pouring rain I wondered who was working outside in this and what they were doing, but couldn't see anything out the windows. It also sounded a bit like a barking ( Read more... )

I know that was really low-hanging fruit, but I couldn't let it go! (At least I didn't engineer an entire conversation around to toads so that I could make a "before/bufo" pun, as I once saw on Usenet back in the day...)

That's exactly a raven sound -- we had one (I wish it would return...) a few years ago in our backyard, and it sounded, in between grawks like one of those African percussion instruments. I knew immediately, having heard them at the White Tower in London, that that was a real, honest-to-god raven.

I'm so glad one of them is in town. They tend to stick within a smallish area (for birds) -- you may have a new neighbor!
