After discovering she couldn't legislate her squick, the County Clerk in >Bakersfield says - No marriages for ANYBODY! I like the excuse of not being able to handle "security" after finding out she couldn't discriminate: what level of a het wedding boom would have her shutting down the office, I wonder ( Read more... )

I had especially fond memories of the kid writing the philosophy paper and pushing a button to add in sprinkles of long words here and there just to make it seem more like a phil paper...that was a LOL moment.

The buggers tried that in Alberta, and took like two days to figure out that most of the straight people were not on their side. Then they folded like an empty auditorium full of metal chairs.

Alberta is likewise, iirc bellatrys June 14 2008, 11:43:21 UTC
a very conservative, oil-drilling-as-main-economy province, no?

So that's an optimistic sign, if similar combined blackmail/scapegoating tactic backfired there. (Clearly Ms. Barnett is hoping that by preventing *anyone* from marrying, she will be able to incense enough of the straight population to make them angry enough to go and vote to ban SSM in the referendum this fall, expecting they'll blame The Gays and their Agenda, instead of being mad at *her* for refusing to either do her job or resign in protest.)

There's the County Clerk who doesn't agree with her church and has been handing out "Certificates of Inequality" on Valentines Day for the past few years (She pays for the printing herself) because the whole situation was making her so upset & that's how she dealt with it.

Not discounting the uncharming person above, I think County Clerks, on average, tend to be more supportive of marriage equity than others in the local community ... since they see the results of discrimination up close.
