Unclear on the concept?

Weather.com's current report for my city has the following statement up right how:

Heavy Snow Warning

Snow accumulating 1 to 3 inches by this evening.

To me, for this part of the country, that's a contradiction in terms. 1-to-three in an hour is heavy, but over 6-12 hours, it's not, and they're not saying when exactly it's going to start ( Read more... )

What I love is when the weather oracle uses the word "snow" in any context, it negates any effect of alarm clocks or parental poking in getting teenagers out of bed for school.

We don't even consider 10" overnight worth staying home for (Great Lakes bordering part of New York state.)

Did you want me to dig out my travel cup (which I am not using) and mail it to you?

I'm in Tennessee walking around in t-shirt (well, usually sweaters, but t-shirt the other morning), and wondering how I got used to this. People here sincerely DO find 1-3 inches of snow a lot....but if we didn't have that much snow by the end of October back home (northern BC), something was wrong.

I don't mind not freezing to death, but I do mind having to travel 20 miles for decent ice-skating.

Heh. I moved to Montana from Tennessee a little over two years ago. First time it snowed, I remember getting all excited and hopping about like a five year old. My boss called me and asked what was up, and I remember yelping that we got a LOT of snow that morning. He got all worried and asked, "really? How much?"

When I answered with "Oh, we must've as much as THREE INCHES," he couldn't stop laughing at me.

Bear in mind that weather.com is the Weather Channel's web site, and is thus based in Marietta, GA, where one inch of snow is a very heavy snowfall.
