that what Harlan Ellison did was a sex-as-power domination ploy motivated by longstanding resentment of Connie Willis both as a Pack Rival and an Uppity Wench, (doubt remaining by main force, despite all the reports of Willis' anger and strained relationship of long duration) then this should finally disperse it, coming straight from the horse's ( Read more... )

The guy who wrote Gor? God, there's an image I needed: Harlan in a tiny little leather loincloth.

How come wehn these guys say they're going to expose the truth or whatever, it's only the same old porn?

There's been some serious looking at that w/r/t the conservative chickenhawks and how - soft and wibbly and decidedly un-Achilles-like they almost all are IRL, and how the ones who are the least he-manly are the ones who are the most bloodthirsty, of late.

But it isn't just limited to conservative foreign policy, alas.

How come wehn these guys say they're going to expose the truth or whatever, it's only the same old porn?

I think that's one of those Zen-like questions-that-is-its-own-answer...

with a harem of boy-toys, either. Nope, old-fashioned bog-standard stock porn trope girl-as-fuckhole. Same with Tinkerbelle.

It's not like, oh, Disney cartoons *already* objectified women as passive, naive-ninnie objects of male desire, skating on the smarmy side of respectable in that 1950s way, oh no ...

Thank you for linking that story!

Interesting that the author is married to Natalie Zemon Davis.

Chan was blacklisted by the McCarthyites, too. Dangerous ideas!

a former political prisoner of the Cold War US and intellectual exile in Canada to this day (but wait! that doesn't happen in the Free West, only in Communist Countries!) for his radical-leftist-egalitarianism of old, he's the same age group as Ellison, and we can see that he was denouncing sexism long before Ellison was posing, and while Ellison was posing as a womens' rights supporter on the one hand, he was writing things like how he slapped and stripped and shamed Brenda, back in 1978. You can't just excuse Ellison by saying "it's that generation"...not with counterexamples around.

Just watched the video posted at MediaBistro, and ooookay, that was worse that I'd thought. What the hell, that wasn't an accidental brushing-against-someone's-chest while hugging, that was intentionally putting his hand up and grabbing her breast. What the frack. She looked distinctly uncomfortable (but playing along because it was her job) from the first that he got up on stage, and he was juvenile the whole time anyway, but good grief. Arsehole!

'Sicho-ji, my salad, I am so stealing that icon.

Also. I just saw the video and I agree with you--it was totally intentional, and totally not part of the "flow" of the joking. It was so weirdly out of left field, I could only process it as a dominance display.

Haut-ji, do go right ahead! :D (Credits to agentrosecotton.)

And it really was a freakishly odd thing to do.

I have never precisely understood why Harlan Ellison retains status in fandom. He is an overrated hack who has lived off his early work for decades without subsequently producing anything of interest (or indeed at all). What is the point of him?
