You probably know the answer to the question you ask towards the end--why didn't the Serious Political Bloggers and the Capitol Hill people zero in on Porter Goss's past? It's simple--the closer you are to power the less honest you can be ( ... )

I mean, I wasn't really surprised when I flipped over Final Days and read the NYT review blurb, "Mr. Nixon emerges as a tragic figure weathering a catastrophic ordeal...and weathering it with considerable courage and dignity." when to me he comes off like nothing so much as Kurtz in Apocalypse Now and/or the original Heart of Darkness, except in a palace rather than a jungle.

What is bothering me is that all these bloggers who have been following politics longer than I have, sometimes longer than I've been a legal adult, who knew who Woodward & Bernstein were and maybe even remembered Watergate when it was breaking, and ditto Iran-Contra, not as confused childhood memories (I kept having weird little flashback moments as I remembered vaguely overhearing my parents talking about "Mexican laundries" and trying to facetiously explain money laundering to me as a very young kid, or the name "Eagle Crow" [Egil Krogh] and thinking he must be an Indian) and how these politically-aware and involved, but as footsoldiers not DC insiders, not ( ... )
