Fourth Mission [Open Commentlog]

[The first thing that the Warrior had done upon being reanimated was fall on all fours and throw up. He had been horrified before - he had seen things that chilled him to the bone - but nothing - nothing - like this. And to be immobilized, unable to move, speak, even to breatheHe managed to get back to his pod and change into clean clothes, but he ( Read more... )

[Mezzaline may not be human, but to see parts of people strewn across the grounds is unsettling. She could trick herself, pretend that it's all animal meat, and to some extent that works. This isn't like seeing pieces of her own people. With the difference in species comes a disconnect.

But still, it disturbs her.

The next thing that disturbs her is seeing Sir Warrior looking so... out of sorts. It's not right to see him just sitting there. He's not even wearing his armor.

That's not right.

Quietly, she walks up to The Warrior, and then she leans down to get to his level.]

Sir Warrior?

[The Warrior starts violently upon hearing Mezzaline's voice. He'd been so wrapped up in his mental battle that he had entirely failed to hear her approach, which nearly undoes what little progress he's made in trying to bring himself out of this dark spiral.

His shoulders hunch, and he turns his head away from Mezzaline.]

Do not call me sir.

[He doesn't feel that he deserves that respect.]

[Mezzaline settles next to him, barely taking her eyes off him for even a moment.

She delicately sets a hand on his shoulder.]

Were you wounded in the attack...?

[He flinches under her touch but doesn't pull away.]

I was immobilized by...that creature.

[He has to force the words out.]

I couldn't move, or speak... I couldn't even breathe. And yet I was alive, aware, while innocents died.

[Mezzaline wonders if humans enjoy touch. Carrace does, and his kind are the closest Mezzaline has ever seen to a human. The Warrior didn't seem pleased, but he did not pull away...

Experimentally, she runs her hand along The Warrior's shoulders so that her whole arm rests upon them.]

I am... sorry. I cannot imagine how it was.

[Somehow, that doesn't seem enough.]

Have you rested, since you were freed?

[The Warrior shudders, but it's more through relief than disgust. Contact is reassurance that his nerves are working again, that he is no longer stone. He wouldn't wish his experience of the past few days on his worst enemy.

And in answer to her question:]

No, I... I couldn't stay still.

[It gets through his head that he's still now and that might require an explanation, so he gestures to the waterfall with the hand holding the crystal.]

The sound of the water is...soothing. I couldn't hear, while I was stone.

[Mezzaline just nods. She wonders, how long was he entombed? Even just a few moments of immobility would be terrible. If it were hours, or even more...

She pushes such thoughts away. Instead, Mezzaline focuses on the crystal in The Warrior's hands.]

Tell me, what is this?

[He looks down at the crystal, and runs his thumb over one of the smooth plains. The memories that tug at him are...bittersweet, to say the very least.]

This is my crystal.

[There is a pause.]

We were losing the war. Chaos had succeeded in injuring Cosmos, and disorder threatened to swallow the world. Our only hope was to gather the crystals, which had the power to save the world...or so we were told.

[He's now wondering whether this lovely shiny thing is just that - a lovely shiny thing.]

My comrades and I each embarked on a quest to locate our crystals, and we succeeded. We returned to Cosmos, certain that we would end the conflict.

[There is audible pain in his voice now.]

But when we arrived, Order's Sanctuary vanished, and Chaos appeared. We attempted to attack him, but he prevented us... And while we watched, helpess, he murdered Cosmos. And after that...we began to vanish.

[There is another pause. The last thing that I remember are the words of our foes as they came to taunt us. They said that Cosmos died because of what ( ... )

[Oh, wow. Excellent topic choice, Mezzaline. This is the crystal of the war he lost and, apparently, the goddess he lost.

She gently rests her free hand on the crystal, her fingers touching The Warrior's.]

Then safely we will keep it. It is what they deserve, I am sure.

[There is a long pause. When the Warrior replies, his voice is a little thick.]

Thank you, Mezzaline.

It is only the truth.

[And it's nothing to thank her for, she thinks, but that she does not say. She's quiet for a little while, but she doesn't move from this position of contact, not even after she speaks again.]

Do you know any songs, Warrior?

[It's less the offer to help keep the crystal safe -- after all, it mainly exists in hammerspace, where it's pretty darn safe -- but it represents Mezz's willingness to take on the Warrior's goals as her own, and he considers that the mark of a true friend.]

I don't. There was...little time for such things.
