I was looking for something light to read while waiting for the episode, and this was not that light something. Seriously, this was amazing. Too many lines to quote, but this stood out:

He imagined his brother smelling of the overwhelming lily perfume Jess' grandmother favored, mixed with dirt and the lingering pall of apartment-smoke, all melted plastic and fried wires.

And this:

Sam woke up with a snuffle and Dean imagined him wiping at his lips. He was probably lucky he didn't end up with ink all over his face, the way he'd pass out on those texts. Drool plus hundreds of years old tomes of horror couldn't mix well.

God, I just loved this.

Thanks! I had a bit too much fun writing it -- sorry it couldn't be the light thing you were looking for? ;D

I think about Dean and smoking often. Did he? Has he? Would he? I don't know why it fixates me except that as an ex-smoker I still wanna smoke.

Anyhow. I love the perspective. I love that Dean won't let Sam smoke. I love Sam's relentless attempts to get Dean to quit.

Great job.

Thanks! And yes, I think this is one of those fics that wouldn't ring true if it weren't from someone who's quit before.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

This is fantastic! Visceral and tightly paced and economically expressed with just the right amount of detail to evoke our feelings via Dean's. The characterization is dead-on. Awesome work!

Thank you so much! I am so glad the economy of it rung true -- I have a soft spot for brevity and only letting out what really needs to hit the paper.

Brilliant. Just a perfect narrative voice for Dean, and I love how you took us and his smoking and his "fuck" through canon - it twisted something in me at how true all of his reactions rang - especially when Sam left for Stanford.

I'm a HUGE fan of pared down prose which conveys all the emotion it needs to in spades. And man, you did that here. I *loved* this.

Thanks! I must say, I'm a fan too -- though it's been a bit of a "learn to love it" kind of journey on my end, since that's turned out to very much be where my voice as a writer has been maturing to.

What I really wanted to hit here -- and I seem to do this a lot in the comment fics -- is the honesty of it. The reality, combined with the natural surreality of the show itself. I'm glad that rang through.

"Welcome back to the world of having a sense of smell."

"Seriously, I will fuck your shit up."

BWAHAHAHAHAA.

I love how well you slip in the angst towards the end and making us fangirls quiver a tad. Masterful.

Why thank you! And for some reason, these pieces always demand a little angst at the end.
