Yay, progress! I'd been in a sewing slump the last few months, but got back into it just yesterday.
Here's something to think about: if you can't make the jacket in time, you can always make sleeves for the kirtle. Sleeves make the dress so much warmer, and obviously take less time than a jacket.
As far as hair goes, you don't *have* to wear a caul. Historically, you very likely would, but you can always just put up/pull back/braid/roll at least the front of your hair, if not all of it, and it'll look just fine.
I made a cute partlet out of machine blackworked fabric, and it sure can make an outfit! I pleated the collar and wore it open for a little extra oomph. I'm about to make a silk organza and lace one though, for my fancy 16th century French gowns.
Wow! Your partlet (both old and new) sounds awesome! I am going to put a ruff on the top of mine so I'm going to have to experiment with that a bit! And thanks for the hair and sleeve advice. I could just do sleeves if I run out of time. Would black wool sleeves on a green linen kirtle look ok?
I was actually going to suggest black wool sleeves! Especially since you're doing black guards, it'll look like it matches.
No matter what kind of partlet you do, it'll totally pull the whole outfit together. I freakin' love partlets. I'm sure you already know lots of info about partlets, but here's a link to a great page about different kinds: http://renaissancetailor.com/demos_partlets.htm
I love her site, and even bought a huge open ruff from her!
