A friend of mine tweeted a few days ago that it was her summer goal to read all the unread books on her bookshelf. I thought this was a noble sentiment, so I've been daydreaming ever since about the day, not too far off, when my academic obligations will come to a halt and I will be free to lose myself in fantasy worlds and murder mysteries and the ( Read more... )

I've never read one of his books! I kind of feel like it's my American duty to read at least one. Of his and of John Grisham's.

Also, I need to cyber-meet Matt, I have decided. Sometime when all of my craziness is over. I need to fulfill my e-big-sister (or whatever I am) duties.

I know. And he also was behind ER, and we all know how I feel about that show. So I don't know why it's taken me so long. For John Grisham either. Maybe I just always equated those books with my grandma.

I told you, I have to give him the stamp of approval. ;) Remember, Lauren, at times = Cal. Only less insane.

I have no doubt. I'm excited about half of the books on this list, for various reasons. :)

What an impressive idea, though I think I'd be similarly stymied by the number of books on my shelf that qualified.

I wind up making better use of my local library during the summer because it's one of the few times I'm confident that I'll have the time and mental energy to charge through the books in a timely enough manner to prevent fines.

Speaking of which, tell me when you're going to read Veronika Decides to Die. I'll try to read it with you.

Oh, do you have this book on your shelf as well? And have you read anything else by Coelho?

No and no. But I trust your judgment. I just went and picked one out from your list. and I did a long distance book club a couple of summers ago and it was very fun.

This is very ambitious! As an old library gal I would esp. plug:
Lady Susan (and the new novel Lady Vernon and Her Daughter, a 'reconstructed' Lady Susan)
Our Mutual Friend
Rebecca - the best 'modern Gothic'
Atlas Shrugged - will take you all summer! but you will see parallels to modern politics
You have one of John Sandford's 'Prey' books - all of the series is pretty good, as are all of Stephen Saylor's books.

Thank you for the recommends! Jane Austen and Ayn Rand happen to be two of my favorite authors, so it is really only a matter of time before I get around to reading these two. And, as an ancient art historian, Saylor is close to obligatory.

I'm looking forward to my summer of fiction.
