as for erik and charles being together... considering the layout of the titanic, it is intensely unlikely - the e deck (as i recall) is at least two floors above the pump/boiler rooms; so, unless charles blatantly disobeyed orders and disappeared down into the bowels of the ship to find erik, they most certainly would have died separately :( BUT they would have both died heroes, at least.

(i could be convinced to write either of these scenarios, btw. seeing as i did a worrying amount of research for this bitty thing. jsyk)
