Since I am in thee competition myself, I will read as I read, but if I don't have time for everything (very likely), I may make a point to include the starred ones to see what appealed to you the most.

I must admit that I don't actually know what LJ Idol is. I've seen it mentioned here and there, but haven't paid much attention.

Another "Idoler" here.

It is a writing competition. Each week you're given a topic, and you can write anything at all it inspires you to write, then you submit your piece, everyone's entries are linked in a poll, you read other's writings and vote for those you like, and others, do the same with yours, and those with the least votes go home.

The best parts (to me) are that there are no entry requirements like I've seen in other writing communities (you submit something you have written to someone's approval for example, which is a big fat NO for me, because those people are no authority to me), and that writing something I am certain will be read by many strangers makes me try my best.

Also, some stories are really eye-opening on topics I know very little about, or, to the contrary, am very interested in, and yet others show me my own situation in a different light.

Will there be posts reminding us to vote? I have a handful of friends participating, so I definitely want to help out by voting this year since I know I won't be able to find the time/energy to participate myself.

From me, I'll probably only do that if it looks like I'm gonna be in the bottom handful of people -- then I might ask my general friends list to vote if they liked it.
