Very informative post. I used to attend Rainbow Gatherings where money or class is not an issue. By the time of Burning Man I was too old to try it, though I always thought I was missing something, now I think maybe not my kind of gig after all.

I was going to mention the Rainbow Gatherings as well. I've only been to one national Rainbow Gathering, and have never been to Burning Man or similar, but my relatively uninformed viewpoint is that the Rainbow Gathering is much more like what Belenen is looking for, and probably more my kind of thing that Burning Man would be.

Yeah... I imagine it used to be somewhat better, but like most organizations that get huge, it's full of people who don't give a shit about the principles espoused.

Everything I've heard about Burning Man, at least the big huge national one, makes me think it's a place for super privileged people to signal that they're somehow more enlightened or in-touch than the other bourgeoisie.

Which it's fine to have your fringe art festival and participate in it, but claiming that it's doing something it's not, or that it's doing more than it actually is (wrt real-life community-building)...nope nope nope.

I've heard about Burning Man, and those kind of events really do sound like a lot to deal with, especially with money issues.

This post was very informative - thank you :)
