Your 'fish out of water' dreams remind me of the 'suffering rabbits' dreams that I had for many years after my father had forced me to have my pet rabbits killed. After a lot of dream-journaling, and other self-exploration, I worked out that for me a rabbit is a dream-symbol of the vulnerable, childlike part of me. Since I worked my way to sanity I still dream of rabbits but they're happy rabbits with plenty of grass to eat. (And I pacify my father but don't intend ever to see him again.)
No doubt you're familiar with how the phrase 'fish out of water' is used. Do you feel like a fish out of water in some part of your life?
I wonder whether your 'ex-spouse' dream was actually about somebody, or something, different from the ex-spouse themself.
