I think you're missing the problem of capitalism here too: some people want to pay the bills, and to do that they write what sells. Not to say that I condone it, or that I personally would choose to do it, but you do (to a certain extent) have to work within the system. And, eventually, ideally, learn how to game it.

On a semi-related topic, does art have to be revolutionary and question norms/ideals in order to be considered art? What if it questions some but reproduces others?

I'm just plain tired of male protagonists in general. We need to see more females as leads in books and movies and tv.
