why I'm vegetarian (but not vegan) -- I want to reduce the strain I put on the earth's resources

About four years ago I started considering going vegetarian after being exposed to factory farming atrocities and beginning to research my meat to make sure it wasn't abused, but was unsure on whether or not to cut out meat entirely. The vegetarians I knew were all vegetarian because they loved animals; they couldn't bear to think of an animal ( Read more... )

Wow. Thank you much for posting this! I've actually been struggling with the same thing for awhile. To me plants are as valuable as animals and they both have feelings etc, yet I'm vegetarian. How is it not okay for me to eat animals but it's okay for me to eat plants? I tried to reason it out with the "least thinky" thing myself, but it wasn't flying with me and for that reason I'd been considering going back omni just to make it "fair", so to speak. I hadn't done so yet and will definitely NOT be doing that now. Thanks for posting the chart(s)--huge help!

Oh it is so nice to see that I'm not the only one who considers flora as valuable as fauna. =)

And great post, Bel! I'm always surprised how much you think like me, and I appreciate your moderation/realistic idealism. <3

You're not the only one who feels that way--though I understand why you do as I've felt that way myself.

Love your username btw :) <3

These graphics are really wonderful. Thanks for sharing them...and your reason for going vegetarian. I was a vegan for seven years and a vegetarian for many years before that because of the effects it has on the planet's resources. After spending the last year living in a culture where eating whatever food is offered to you is of utmost importance (be it termites or pumpkin leaves), I no longer label myself either of those things even if I choose to continue living that way. The label, after all, isn't important; the beneficial effects are.

Those are great charts! I've never seen them before; I'll have to share them.

The impact on the environment was my reason for going vegetarian in the first place. Now there are other reasons I include for my continuation of the practice, such as less sacrificed lives.

I couldn't be happy without the occasional ice cream cone so I can't go completely vegan, lol.
