actually, your friend had it backwards -- she mentioned that she was worried she wouldn't love her bio-child as much as the others -- but that after Shiloh was born she knew she loved her as much.

*actually, I remembered more -- she said she was afraid she wouldn't be able to connect with Shiloh as much because she was born into such privilege (rich, beautiful, famous, white, blonde & blue-eyed) whereas her other children had already been through so much.

I've not read in depth about Angelina Jolie myself. Interestingly I have picked up a lot of what you've read about her, just from her body language. I can tell she is an awesome and compassionate person too for all of the reasons you mentioned.

I've been reading all of Charles de Lint's Newford books and stories, and throughout all of them is a strong recurring theme of childhood abuse and trauma, especially sexual. Nearly all the female characters were raped as children, and many male characters were beaten and sometimes raped as children. Sometimes I wonder how I can get through them all without breaking.
I just finished reading a story called "Bird Bones And Wood Ash" in the collection The Ivory and the Horn. It's about a young woman who was abused by alcoholic parents, came out as a lesbian, suffered abuse and trauma, and then lost her lover to cancer. She was visited by animal spirits who gave her special gifts. She became a vigilante against child molesters, reaching into their minds and destroying those things that made the men monsters -- men who raped their own daughters, beat their wives, destroyed lives. I recommend it. In fact, I recommend all the de Lint books about Newford and especially about the character Jilly Coppercorn, who suffered unimaginable childhood ( ... )
