My birth mother laughed often, and it was a pealing laughter that would fill a church. In the days before GPS or satellite communication, I could always tell where my mother was.

I used to be embarrassed by that. Now, as I'm older, I'm somewhat amazed that she was able to laugh so much through her many hardships. I used to think it was her having a disproportionate sense (Do you realize how BAD things are??) and now, I wonder if it actually was an inner strength, or at the very least, a fortunate blindness, like angels shielded her eyes from the worst things.

This is one of the many, many things I will never know.

I think the strongest and bravest people are the ones who can still find joy and beauty in the mix of a sick sad mess.

I too am learning to cherish laughter, especially my own.

I realized that I hadn't laughed in a long time when a few weeks ago I was startled by my own laughter.

When I was a little girl, my mom would yell at me when I laughed saying that it was 'too shrill'..so I didn't laugh much when I was younger because I'd get chastised. I think that's part of the reason why I still don't laugh really often, or when I do, it doesn't sound an awful lot like me.

Aw, that sucks. You, then, are hereby commanded to indulge in hearty guffaws (if you feel so inclined) when no one else is around! That way you can rediscover your laugh and come to love it.

oh how awful! I'm sorry she did that. :-( I hope you can learn to love your laugh as it truly is. Which is beautiful -- all true laughter is beautiful.
