I would be interested in a post about all of that. But especially water people, because the sea is amazing and I wanted to be a selkie when I was little. Now I want to be a mermaid, fantasise about that instead. Mermaid, Selkie, Mermaid, Selkie. I can only swim underwater though, soon as my head breaks the surface I start floudering. Wouldn't it be lovely though, to have that kind of weightless freedom, be able to breathe underwater. Would have to have some magical power to ward off sharks and nasty things like that. See in the dark too, of course, and not feel the cold.
ooh, or instead of having a magical power to keep them away, maybe a kind of kinship, to where the sharks could be almost like your protector against all else that is evil, i.e. human predators?
Human predators of mermaids? Not nice, humans eating mermaids. Kind of image like goya, saturn eating his children, except fishier. I suppose there could be kinship, but I don't like sharks. Speciesist that I am. Has to be either kinship, magical powers, or a big stick.

If ya wanna read some high fantasy, read Tad Williams' "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn" series (first book -- "The Dragonbone Chair") -- if you want modern/urban fantasy, read Tad Williams' "War of the Flowers." He's an AWESOME writer and every fantasy reader should read his novels.
