Today started the Hancock County 4-H Fair in Greenfield, Ind., where I work. Coincidentally also the start of the Marion County Fair -- that's Indianapolis' county, where I live. i'm in texas. fairs should be in the fall, when the harvest has been brought in.

with the glaring exception here in houston of the great houston livestock show and rodeo, which is a 14 day extravaganza of music and animals and all the fun stuff that goes along with most country fairs, with the exception of vegetable products.

we DO have the added attraction of the section of the animal show, where baby animals are born. seriously. they carefully transport pregnant sheep, pigs, and cows hoping that they'll give birth at the show, not to mention the huge incubators with eggs just quivering as their fowl emerge. (chicken and ducks, as i remember.)

I grew up in WI and our county fair was in early July, I believe, just after the 4th. The state fair is late August, just before schools start up again. So it sounds like IN is on the same upper-midwest schedule we were.

I was never in any of the animal projects, but I had 4-H entries in the county fair from ages 8-17.
