I am much like you, although I did not grow up in quite a rural area. But my grand dad was a Marine, uncle was a deputy, dad was a responsible gun owner. All the men in my youth taught me gun safety and proper gun ownership.

These days I am married to a retired Army officer. His dad taught gun safety to the local scouts and ran a gun range and he was the main range safety officer in every unit he was in during his Army career, so safety has never been a factor around our house.

The kids were taught gun safety, all the guns here have locks and, except for the historical displays (blackpowder that is unloaded) are under lock and key also.

IF we owned a cannon, it would be for historical recreation use only. But I think a 17th century blunderbuss would be cooler =p.

Anyway love the post!

the thing that really bothers me about the AWB is it banned certain aspects of a rifle, but there was no rhyme or reason for it. and i can't tell you how popular the M4-patterned rifle is for 3gun competition.

also, worth noting: among the list of firearms and accessories used in the Colorado shooting you'll find a 100-round drum; i've looked at every single photo i can find of that M4gery, and in none of those photos do i see a drum. none. nada. zip. zilch. probably because they're ridiculously unreliable pieces of crap. but that won't stop them from trying to ban drum mags.

also worth noting: this. which really, really angers me. for an enthusiast, 6k rounds is nothing. we have something like 10k of JUST .22, because it's cheaper to buy in bulk and we go through the stuff like it's water ( ... )

what if we just have them for fun?

In my thinking, I'm differentiating "need" from "would be fun to have" -- just as I've always thought the civilian Hummer was stupid and impractical.

And I have a hard time seeing the banning of the 100-round drum as the part of the slippery slope that dooms us all to tyranny.

I honestly don't know how far the online-ammo ban will go in Congress. At this point I'd guess not very far. If the Obama-panic ammo shortages are still happening, that makes internet and mail-ordering more important. Still, you'd think that the flow of bullets this way was at least monitored.

As I wrote. This is mainly a stating of my thoughts and beliefs, but without asserting that mine is the only valid position, or that I'm completely right. And I do value your feedback. Thanks!

You make some excellent and well-reasoned points, and thank you, for being able to approach this with not only a sense of reason but a willingness to justify your position!

I'm with you - well-regulated. And for the same reason that we can't own a tank, or drive at 100mph off a race track, it's important to regulate the nature of the guns we can own, and the locations and times we can use them.

Thanks. I was hoping a lot of people would read this so that I could get some feedback -- where I'm wrong and full-of-it, etc.

I've driven over 100mph off a racetrack -- not that I'd endorse it for other drivers who are not as competent as me =)

I'm a lot like you. Grew up in a rural area (yay ozarks!)... I never had my first gun until a few years ago when someone broke into my house. Didn't take anything, just broke in for no apparent reason. Scared the hell out of me so I got myself a 12 gauge shotgun and my stepdad taught me how to use it. One thing he stressed is never pull the trigger unless you plan to kill.

Good advice he gave you!

And I like that you not only got the gun but learned how to use it. The hills ain't as safe as they used to be.

You said this just as the cops drove away from the neighbor's house. Sheesh. Domestic dispute, yet again, because the dude beats his wife and threatens all the neighbors. Hope I remember how to use the gun just in case he figures out it was me who called the cops.

Yeah, keep that gun handy. Maybe if he knows you have it, he's the kind of coward who won't bother an armed woman.

Though I do not own a gun myself, I do support our Second Amendment rights, too. My husband is an avid hunter and all the anti-gun propaganda drives him crazy. Your entry was rational, reasonable and well said!
