It's OK, it has Jesus on it

"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross."
- Sinclair Lewis

I've recently discovered the opposite of Godwin's Law (in which you always lose the internet argument), which is that when someone -- with apparent sincerity -- invokes the name of Jesus Christ, he automatically wins the argument. If someone ( Read more... )

Holy shit, is there a lot of laugh-out-loud "oh my God, did they really equate HIM with THAT?" in that print, or what? Talk about overgeneralization and lies. Still, art has a right to exist - even that which I wouldn't hang on my wall if you paid me.

What blew my mind was how good and "patriotic" nearly everyone on the list thought it was -- this is part of the reason why I don't join Veterans organizations.

Well, the art piece DOES glorify soldiers and basically places them on level with Jesus and the Founders. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm glad the servicepeople are doing that job so I don't have to, but I don't worship the military or anyone in it as better than me or more holy. We do different jobs, but we're both doing our best to make this country run in decent fashion.

V_R sent the painting to me and several things jumped out:
1) Doesn't the "artist" realize that WWII, Vietnam, and Korean wars were in totally different decades and mostly fought by differen generations and therefore cannot be represented by one character?
2) Why are all of the blacks hidden? I mean, seriously! There are three blacks in this painting and they are all hidden way in the back. Yeah, I guess that's what Harriet Tubman wanted to accomplish when she wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin."

Oh, and, like you, I don't mind the evil thoughts running through my head when I am dragged through the mud just because I'm a reporter.

(I also told Ver that there must be something wrong with me for thinking the Satan depiction is kind of cool looking.)

What I can't stand about this revisionist history of the US Constitution is that it is being given by Jesus of Nazareth to us as a perfect document inspired by heaven above.

If only the artist had stayed awake in history class for a freakin' day, he would have learned that the Constitution is a work of disagreement and human compromise, rather than chiseled into rock on a holy mountain somwhere.

There are several funny parodies of this painting on the net. If I can find them, I'll send you the links.

This one has the same painting as McNaughton's, but the mouse-over texts have all been changed--
