My mom's cats used to do all of these things (and still do on rare occassion) when she went to work, as well. She finally tried leaving a radio on during the day, on low volume--and the cats have stopped wrecking her apartment. She thinks that the background noise makes the cats feel like someone is there with them, so they don't feel the urge to destroy everything out of boredom/loneliness/anger.
In fact, when I told her about your situation with Obsidian, she suggested you trying this for him for a while, to see if it helps (at least until you find a new home for him). Who knows, maybe it will, maybe it won't. Now the big question will be to find the type of music HE enjoys, LOL. ;-)
