Thank you for writing this, BB, it's really helpful!
However, one further question about the marshmallow girl-icon . . . *hides* Can you tell me a bit more about the texture use in the upper half, underneath the text? I'm always curious how makers go about effects like that. :)
I guess I'm not sure what you mean about the upper half of the icon underneath the text? *confused* Are you asking about the light effect or the grid pattern on the icon?
If it's the light effect you're asking about, I'm pretty sure I just took a large round soft brush at around 65px in white and painted near the top of the icon. I set the layer to Screen and lowered the opacity to around 75-80%. I might have used gaussian blur on the painted area as well.
If it's the grid-like effect you want to know about, it's actually a brush I have. I downloaded it from uglybusiness's website. I don't recommend visiting the site though. Last time I was there I got a virus warning. I have the brush but I don't have a clue how to upload it and/or share it. :/
The light effect, that's exactly what I meant, thank you! ♥
And, as for the brush: Weeeeeell, I could explain to you how? It's just a few clicks. ;) I got another version of PS, but I'm pretty sure that can't have changed much. ETA: Do you have the .abr at hand, or do you have it as a present in PS?
I don't know a thing about working with brushes in Photoshop as I don't use them all that often, save for the grid thingy. It's in my preset brush folder as an .abr, is that what you meant?
Oh wow, thank you so much for the mention at the top, considering you're one of the most amazing makes I know ♥
This was a very interesting read. I love that some of our steps in starting on the image are the same, and I really loved reading what you had to say on why you cropped an image a certain way. And everything is just so shiny! :)
