Just for you, shiyasim, because... well, because I was bored in math class.

Title: Culture Shock
Wordcount: 289
Notes: Takes place just before the Hokuto Cup, when Hikaru and Yashiro are staying at Akira's house and Kurata is acting as their "mentor." So, vague spoilers in that sense. Yashiro's wondering about something, and Kurata doesn't quite have the answer he's expecting. Akihika. (Of course.)

"Kurata-sensei?"

Yashiro was gathering the stones from his last practice match with the older pro, separating them black and white into their go-ke. Kurata was picking at the leftovers from lunch. He looked up, licking soy sauce off his pudgy fingers.

"Hmm?"

Yashiro set the lids on the go-ke with soft clicks. "Are Touya and Shindo really friends?" The other two teens were not currently present - Hikaru had huffed off to who-knows-where after losing both another match and the subsequent argument to Akira. Akira had watched Yashiro's match with mild interest for a while before wandering off, muttering something about making more tea.

"'Course they are," Kurata said around an egg roll. "Friends 'n rivals. They're famous for it."

"Then..." Yashiro glanced over at the other goban, its stones strewn haphazardly across its face where Shindo had messed them up. "Why do they..."

"Argue so much?" Yashiro nodded. Kurata shrugged. "'S just unresolved sexual tension."

Yashiro sputtered. "P-p-pardon?"

"Yeah. Ogata 10-Dan doesn't like it at all; he gets so uptight when they argue like that. Always had Touya-kun pegged for himself, y'see. The pervert." Kurata paused to flick some rice off his shirt. "I expect it's harder for them now that they're staying under the same roof."

Yashiro stared.

Kurata babbled on, unaware of the culture shock that was eating the younger pro's brain. "Us upper Dans around here, we have a bet going on when one of them will lose it and jump the other. Now, the way I figured..."

Yashiro's eyes seemed to be engulfing his face. He gawked at Kurata, wordless.

Somewhere upstairs, there was a loud thump, followed by a muffled groan.

Yashiro choked.

"Huh," Kurata said. He glanced at his watch. "I win."
